James Simms graduated from The Ohio State University in 1945 with a D.D.S. degree. Upon graduating James then went on to Troy, Ohio where he practiced dentistry for the next 45 years. James took an active role in the Troy community; he was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, Chairman of the Tippecanoe Boy Scouts and President of the Haywood School PTA. He has been active in many state and local dentistry organizations throughout his career.
