Mark accepted a Scholarship from the U.S. Air Force and received his medical degree at The Ohio State University in 1985. He entered a pediatric residency at Wright- Patterson Air Force Medical Center and attained the rank of captain. He then completed three years of subspecialty training in pediatric cardiology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and later became Chief of Cardiology at Wilford Hall , the Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas where he was promoted to the rank of major. He was awarded an honorable discharged in 1995 and went into private practice.
